Current Events -Tarantula’s Feet

26 May

This is my current events post about tarantula’s feet. Please enjoy my post!

Summary

Scientists have been wondering why tarantulas can climb a smooth surface because they are heavier than other spiders so when they climb a smooth surface, they should fall off, but they don’t. The scientists in United Kingdom experiment why they can climb vertical places. There about 900 types of tarantulas and they live in tropical or deserts. They are poisonous and they eat small insects but the big ones sometimes eat lizards or small birds. All spiders have tiny hair on there legs so that they can climb up vertical surfaces. But scientists think that there are still other things that help tarantulas stick to the surface. About five years ago, German scientists said that tarantulas could be producing sticky silk from its legs that helps them stick. Other scientists thought that this is unlikely. They say that the silk is just the spinnerets produce. The experiment in U.K proved that the German scientist were true. They also experimented with other kinds of tarantulas but they all produce sticky silk from their legs.

Connections

This reminds me of a time when I saw a spider climbing up a wall because that time, I wondered how spiders are able to stick to the wall.

How spiders can climb up the wall reminds me of Spiderman because he can also climb up walls and he is supposed to be a spider too.

Questions

I wonder what actually the sticky silk that helps them stick to the wall is made out of?

How do microscopic hairs help? I think that hairs are bendy so they can’t hold up heavy things.

Are there any tarantulas in Japan?

Thinking Hats

Orange: I think that it is interesting that tarantulas produce sticky silk from their legs because other spiders don’t and that’s their original way to stickĀ  to flat vertical surfaces.

Blue: Before I read this article, I didn’t know how spiders walk on vertical places but I learned that spiders use its microscopic hair and tarantulas have sticky silk coming out from their legs.

Black: I think that the poison they have isn’t good because if you get bitten, I think it will hurt very much.

Yellow: I think that it’s good that scientists found this out because I think that many people wondering about this.

Red: I feel a little bit scared because tarantulas are poisonous and I don’t know how it feels like when you are bitten.

Purple: I think that it was good that they proved that the sticky silk was true because then from this, scientists can research more about this.

Green: I think that scientists should research about how the sticky silk goes to its legs.

Sophie

(my pet Husky that I used to have)

I chose to describe my pet Husky because I thought that a thing would be easy to describe especially because I spent time with her a lot.

Simile Poem

14 Mar

This isĀ  a simile poem that I made during Writer’s Workshop…

cs.iusb.edu

A fresh shiny apple,

Like a heart-shaped balloon,

Filled with love so that there isn’t a single wrinkle,

The balloon is as red as an apple,

Because of all the love in it

I chose this simile because the apple looks like a heart shape. But it’s not exactly like a shape so I noticed that it looks more like a balloon.

Metaphor Poem

This is a metaphor poem that I made in writer’s workshop…

The sky is a dragon’s fire breath,

Across the sunset sky,

Fighting and defeating its enemy,

To get a bigger territory

I think that the sky is a dragon’s fiery breath because the clouds are reddish-orange because of the sunset. So it reminds me of a dragon’s breath.
